Policy Brief: Powers of states to prevent pesticide-related harms in India

This policy brief examines the existing law and policy framework in India. It outlines the powers of the states to reduce pesticide-related harms.

The Central Government regulates pesticides under the Insecticides Act (1968).  However, the act grants limited powers to state governments to regulate pesticides. States may also use laws and policies related to health, environment and organic farming to prevent pesticide-related harms.

Understanding the powers of states to respond to pesticide-related emergencies will help prevent harms to health and the environment.

This document is a summary of a review of the regulatory landscape relating to pesticides in India.
