Nepal Health Research Council honours Dr Rakesh Ghimire for reducing pesticide-related deaths

CPSP consultant Dr Rakesh Ghimire has received a top award for his work to reduce pesticide-related deaths in Nepal.

Dr Ghimire, who also works as an assistant professor at the Institute of Medicine at Tribhuvan University, has been awarded the ‘Mrigendra Raj Pandey Young Health Researcher Award’ by the Nepal Health Research Council, Government of Nepal.

The accolade was made at the 11th National Summit of Health and Population Scientists of Nepal.

Speaking about the award, Dr Ghimire said: “This is a fantastic achievement for I would like to dedicate this award to Michael Eddleston and all the CPSP members.

“Our efforts to reduce pesticide deaths in Nepal has been acknowledged by Government of Nepal, Nepal Health Research council.  Thank you to all CPSP members for your continuous support and motivation.”

Dr Ghimire led on a paper, co-authored with Michael Eddleston, CPSP Director, Leah Utyasheva, Policy Director and Consultant Dilli Ram Sharma  to identify pesticides responsible for suicides in the country.

The research contributed to Government of Nepal officially banning two highly hazardous pesticides in 2024.
