The Global Alliance on Highly Hazardous Pesticides (GAHHPs) is now accepting applications for membership.
The Centre for Pesticide Suicide Prevention has long championed the establishment of the Alliance and encourages all relevant stakeholders across the health, agriculture, and environmental sectors to join this important initiative.
Becoming a member means joining a voluntary, multi-stakeholder, multisectoral partnership. It will include all interested stakeholders, such as individual countries, civil society groups, not-for-profits, academic institutes, and industry, among others.
What is the Global Alliance on Highly Hazardous Pesticides?
Highly hazardous pesticides (commonly referred to as HHPs) are pesticides that cause disproportionate harm to human health and the environment.
The Global Alliance on HHPs was proposed and endorsed at the Fifth Meeting of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) in September 2023, where delegates passed a resolution calling for:
‘the formation of a global alliance on highly hazardous pesticides with the goal of taking effective measures to phase out highly hazardous pesticides in agriculture where the risks have not been managed and where safer and affordable alternatives are available; and to promote transition to and make available those alternatives.’
How to become a member
Organisations will be approved as members of the GAHHPs based on:
- Applications received with details of a designated Contact Person, and with official endorsement from the organisation’s leadership;
- Completed declarations on the application form;
- Demonstrated involvement in pesticide management or related fields such as agriculture, public health, environment, food systems, and human rights;
- Evidence of the organization’s involvement in research, policy engagement, or practical experience relevant to highly hazardous pesticides and their management, or relevant to pesticides and pesticide alternatives.
- A Letter of Intent, signed and emailed to pesticide-management@fao.org in support of the application.
Applications are made through the online application form. This must be accompanied by the Letter of Intent, which is emailed separately.
What next?
All applicants will be formally notified of the outcome of their application within 20 working days.
Members will be updated on the progress of the Alliance at its official launch at the Global Framework on Chemicals – 1st International Conference in Geneva in November 2026.
