Why Toxic Pesticides That Kill Farmers Are Still In Use In Maharashtra

Apart from the three deaths this year, accidental exposure to pesticides during spraying has landed 135 farmers from Yavatmal in hospitals since July 2018, according to district health office records. Our investigations showed that farmers in these parts routinely seek medical treatment--medicines, injections and saline drips--to deal with giddiness, vomiting and blurred vision caused by pesticide poisoning. In 2017, 63 farmers and farm labourers died from the fatal effects of handling toxic pesticides in Maharashtra, most from eastern and northeastern parts; of them, at least 21 deaths were from Yavatmal district in the Vidarbha region.
